The Hartford Software Engineer (Java) in WINDSOR, Connecticut

Title: Software Engineer (Java)Location: United States-Connecticut-WindsorJob Number: 1801418The Hartford’s Claim IT team is seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented, results-driven Application Developer to support Invest and maintenance projects.  This position requires an individual with software development skills, particularly in Java/J2EE.  The candidate will be responsible for technical delivery of system design and development and/or collaboration with software vendors and other teams on development initiatives.   This includes working closely with The Hartford’s data warehouse, and other Claims application teams, our Sourcing partners and software vendors to ensure detailed analysis, identify maintainable, sustainable solutions and complete delivery within tight timeframes.  The successful candidate should have experience in delivering quality technical solutions, ability to develop strong knowledge of applications, points of integration, business and IT processes and providing maintenance and production support to ensure a high level of reliability, sustainability, cost effectiveness and continuous improvement/efficiencies.

 

Responsibilities of the position include:

Develop code that conforms to The Hartford coding standards and industry best practices

Works closely with stakeholders, software vendor and across teams to design, develop, implement and document automation solutions that align with the business needs and also consistent with the architectural vision. 

Functions as subject matter expert and advocate for the software applications supported. Requires depth and breadth of knowledge of the business, technologies, application integration and interfaces.

Responsible for the quality and completeness of detailed technical specifications, solution designs, and code reviews as well as adherence to non-functional requirements.

Responsible for technical deliverables for invest and maintenance projects through the software development lifecycle, including validating the completeness of estimates, quality and accuracy of technical designs, builds and implementation. Develop technical documentations for various project deliverables and phases

Proactively assesses technical issues and risks that could impact project schedule and/or budget.

Identify opportunities to reduce total cost of ownership in the operational application support areas

Debug and troubleshoot defects and production incidents and/or collaborate with software vendor and business stakeholders to develop sustainable solutions to application issues, defects and business problems to ensure prompt and appropriate resolution of defects and ensure root cause identification and resolution

Assist in performance analysis along with application reporting and monitoring

Provide innovative ideas and process optimization solutions.

Supports Claims stakeholder interests and drives compliance with Tech Currency and Risk and Compliance activities and policies.

Bachelor degree in Computer Science or related field

At least 3 years of experience developing  web based Java/J2EE  applications

Strong communication, analytical and problem solving skills

Strong understanding of Object Oriented design and methodologies

Familiar with SDLC and Agile methodology

Experience in building continuous integration pipelines using DevOps tools

Experience working on development and maintenance teams and working across teams and on SaaS/vendor software applications.

Hands-on experience, working knowledge and strong technical skills in the following technologies:

Java/J2EE

Application Server like WebSphere, WebLogic, JBoss

SOAP and RESTful Web Services

Web related technologies, JSF,  JSP, CSS and Servlets

XML, XSD

Ant or similar scripting tool

Jenkins/Nexus, Anthill pro or similar build and deployment tool

Shell and Python scripting

Database technologies such as DB2, Oracle, SQL, ORM, JPA, Coherence

MQ

JavaScript, ECMAScript, AJAX, JQuery, CSS and HTML5

Source Code version tools such as Github, Subversion

SSL/TLS security

LDAP

Unix,  Linux experience

Cognos reporting knowledge - helpful 

Other relevant skill sets include:

Business Knowledge & Partnership (insurance/financial industry background)

Planning and Project Management

Financial Stewardship
