The Commercial Markets Technology organization of The Hartford Financial Services Group is in the midst of a multi-million dollar investment initiative that will help redefine the landscape of IT. The Hartford is seeking qualified candidate to fill the role of a Senior Data Engineer in our Enterprise Data Organization.

The ideal candidate will leverage strong hands on technical and leadership skills to drive high profile, multi-year initiatives focused on SDLC improvements and Agile Methodologies using existing technologies (Informatica, PL-SQL, Scheduling tools (Autosys), and Unix scripting as well as exposure and/or work experience using new technologies (including Hadoop, Tableau and Data Virtualization tools) to develop complex data assets that support organizational decision making via prototyping, data discovery, and profiling for the Commercial Markets Investment Portfolio. This role will be responsible to work directly with business customers and also lead technical teams. The ideal candidate will also offer expertise with ETL/Data Warehouse experience and prior Technical Lead experience.

The ideal candidate will by a dynamic person that has been engaged with Agile teams and can play a multi-faceted role within the team. He/she will be adaptable to change and can work fluidly with a team of resources performing in different roles on the team.


  • Utilize tools such as Informatica, B2B, PL/SQL, Hadoop, etc… to develop complex data assets that support organizational decision making via prototyping, data discovery, profiling, etc…

  • Working with Integration of Big Data Capabilities like Spark and Oozie with Talend data Integration

  • Work with business partners and Performance Analytics teams to help develop requirements for data assets, prototyping, and data delivery

  • Support development of training materials and perform end-user training to ensure a high degree of customer engagement

  • Support documentation, metadata and data visualization of the assets

  • Participate in the development of the implementation plan as a subject matter expert

  • Responsible for the quality and completeness of detailed technical specifications, solution designs, and code reviews as well as adherence to non-functional requirements.

  • Oversees technical deliverables for invest and maintenance projects through the software development lifecycle, including validating the completeness of estimates, quality and accuracy of technical designs, builds and implementation.

  • Proactively accesses technical issues and risks that could impact project schedule and/or budget.

  • Collaborates with vendors and stakeholders to develop sustainable solutions to application issues, defects and business problems and ensure root cause identification and resolution.

  • Identifies opportunities to reuse strategic components and reduce customization. Identify opportunities to reduce total cost of ownership in the operational application support areas.

  • Results driven with commitment to meeting deadlines

  • Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • High level of independence, but is also a team player, a coach, a mentor and demonstrates a high level of ownership


  • 7 years of data analysis, manipulation and development in a Data Warehouse, reporting, data migration, or integration environment

  • Desired educational experience include, but are not limited to: Computer Science, Engineering, IT, Management Information Systems, Data Analytics, Applied Mathematics, and Business

  • 1-3 years of experience in the insurance or investment industry

  • Working experience with Big Data technologies and concepts on a Hadoop platform (e.g. Scoop, Hive, Pig, NoSQL, etc…) and willing/able to adapt to future technologies

  • Comprehensive understanding of end-to-end Data Warehousing architecture (i.e. Kimball/Dimensional modeling techniques/HADOOP architecture and best practices), knowledge of ETL process across various tools, and understanding of the data usage within Business Intelligence reporting tools

  • Strong SQL skills - ability to design, implement, and oversee

  • ETL processes

  • Familiarity with emerging data centric technologies such as data virtualization

  • Ability to choose and effectively utilize data wrangling technologies

  • Experience with Agile delivery and scrum teams
