Title: Marine Underwriting OfficerLocation: United States-Connecticut-HartfordJob Number: 1801109Reporting in to the Senior Vice President, Middle Market, the Marine Underwriting Officer is accountable for evaluating and expanding The Hartford’s capabilities as a provider of specialized inland and ocean marine coverages, including the alignment and enhancement of underwriting risk appetite, multi-year product strategic agenda, guidelines, policies and processes needed to further growth objectives. This is a critical leadership role within The Hartford’s Commercial Markets, Middle Market business as we look to further our investment in specialization across our underwriting teams. The Marine Underwriting Officer will be accountable for strategy development and overall financial results of a large book of business including both inland (excluding construction property, builder’s risk), ocean and marine center P&Ls, and will provide leadership to a diverse team of highly skilled production-focused and referral resources with countrywide accountabilities.Specific Responsibilities:Strategy Development & Execution•Develops and executes the overall marine strategy in collaboration with other home office and field leadership; communicates the strategic agenda and roadmap to stakeholders and drives/monitors successful execution of initiatives•Operates as a marine subject matter expert providing insight and thought leadership to P&C Commercial Markets and functional leaders•Influences and implements multi-year appetite, underwriting and product agendas; oversees and directs new product development and the continuous review and maintenance of growing product portfolio•Collaborates with senior leadership to conduct strategic assessments of marine in-force book and industry opportunities, leading to a defined strategies to deliver profitable long-term growth; drives specialization and value-added differentiation through the evaluation and expansion of marine offerings and capabilitiesUnderwriting and P&L Management•Accountable for the financial results of the inland (excluding construction property, builder’s risk) and ocean marine countrywide books of business; responsible for profit, net rate and other financial indicators to meet operating plan commitments •Serves as underwriting officer specific to inland (ex. construction property) and ocean marine books of business; monitors and maintains accountability for book performance and adequately assesses complex individual risks as needed; underwrites and partners with actuarial team to determine appropriate rate and limits for different classes of risks•Provides technical underwriting consulting on exposure analysis, risk selection, rate adequacy, reinsurance, program structure, product and appropriate risk/reward balance•Leads the development, management and communication of marine underwriting policies and practices, including new or revised underwriting positions and appetite; ensures underwriting guidance is regularly reviewed and maintained using a broad view of the market•Aligns closely with underwriting, actuarial, regulatory, claims, legal and operations partners to drive profitability and overall business performance; monitors and analyzes line of business results and reacts quickly and effectively to growth and profit challenges•Gathers and evaluates industry trends, competitive intelligence, customer feedback and financial performance in order to identify trends or emerging issues requiring adjustment or changes to product or rate resulting in improvement to or maintenance of acceptable financial results•Evaluates and monitors underwriting execution and acumen around risk selection, evaluation, pricing and terms & conditions•Owns business unit execution strategies including process, operating routines and standards; monitors risk decision path and authority delegation framework•Leads business unit quality management, compliance, risk management execution in partnership with MM Chief Underwriting Officer and UW Practices teamDistribution Leadership•Development and execution of operating plans and strategic initiatives in partnership with home office and field leaders, using targeted underwriting policies, sales and marketing activities•Closely manages plan results and directs and participates in the implementation of specific action to address financial and execution shortfalls •Provides input to underwriting strategies and practices with specific distribution partners•Develops and nurtures strategic alliances with specialized distribution partners and clients •Maintains an active external industry presence in order to cultivate opportunities for all business units enterprise-wideLeadership & Talent Management•Directly manages a large team consistent of production, renewal and referral resources; works closely with partner organizations to ensure clear alignment•Responsible for coaching, developing, training and performance management of teams in both field and home office roles•Informs overall Middle Market underwriting and product training agendas to further the team’s knowledge base, and acts as a subject matter expert in recommending marine specific training content and resources •Fosters a high performance, top quartile employee engagement and performance enablement culture; establishes and monitors operating routines to maximize collaboration and team connectivity•Accountable for talent pipelining and acquisition efforts, performance management, talent development, succession planning and compensation decisions  Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree required; MBA or other related graduate level degree preferred•CPCU or other relevant industry designation preferred•15 years Commercial P&C insurance industry experience required, with background and deep expertise in marine underwriting•Strong industry reputation as both a technical and customer focused market leader•Underwriting acumen and discipline, technical knowledge and a depth of specialized experience in marine coverages is essential•Sound financial acumen, understanding of P&L, knowledge and experience with setting and driving an operating plan; track record of setting goals and delivering results•Superior analytical & problem-solving skills, including the ability to encourage new ways of looking at problems, processes and solutions, develop sound recommendations for capitalizing on opportunities and improving results, and generate new ideas for profitable growth, including new product ideas, markets and target customers•Leadership/management experience, strong mentoring and coaching discipline •Superior communication skills, both oral & written; ability to deal confidently with all levels of the organization, including senior executives within home office, field leadership, underwriters and business partners•Team player with outstanding inter-personal, negotiation and organizational influencing skills;
