Title: Director, Government AffairsLocation: United States-Connecticut-HartfordJob Number: 1801281The Government Affairs Group promotes The Hartford's public policy agenda in Washington, DC and state capitals across the country. We advocate for The Hartford on all issues that the company faces with the government on all levels – state legislatures, insurance departments, and governors as well as the U.S. Congress and Administration. The Government Affairs Group also designs and executes the company’s political engagement strategy, including managing its political action committee, overseeing employee education and grassroots activities on public policy issues. The Director, Government Affairs will be based in Hartford, CT.


Provide advocacy support for complex matters and legislative or regulatory issues; capable of effectively executing advocacy plans;

Draft position papers and policy documents for use by executives;

Develop subject matter expertise and demonstrates sound understanding of political process and advocacy levers;

Manage outside consultants on discrete issues;

Deal directly with, and earn the confidence of, executive management within the businesses and corporate functional areas;

Has a strong understanding of the organization and its businesses;

Present company position to employees and external stakeholders; 

Represent company at political events and trade associations, including taking on task force or working group leadership roles;

Make independent selections and supporting rationale for candidates for PAC political support;

Deal directly with public officials and senior staff on behalf of the company, communicating company positions or acting in support of ELT/EOT engagement.


Bachelor’s degree required; J.D., or other relevant advanced degree preferred.

Minimum seven to ten years’ experience:

working in a corporate or governmental environment

interfacing with senior leaders and external audiences on behalf of an organization

Proven experience in:

Analytical and informational writing

Legislative and legal research

Project management

Managing websites; creating content schedule, posting information etc.

Knowledge of/experience in Property Casualty experience desirable

Proficiency in Microsoft Office (particularly Power Point, Word, Excel)

Please note: candidates will be asked to provide writing samples and examples of Power Point work 

Excellent interpersonal and written and verbal communications skills

Flexible; ability to handle a wide variety of projects in a fast paced environment

Ability to work independently and efficiently

Proficiency with LexisNexis

Understanding of federal and state lobbying compliance laws
