Overview of the Position

The Hartford’s Personal Lines Business Intelligence team is seeking a Business Data Analysis Consultant to support data quality, data governance and data standards practices. This consultant is the data steward for Personal Lines. As a data steward, the consultant will collaborate with members of various business teams within Personal Lines and IT to manage data as an asset and to ensure trusted quality data. The data stewardship team is responsible for process improvement, as well as serving in a consultant role to teams within Personal Lines, providing best practices, improved processes, improved architecture, data interpretation and training on governed data sources.

The primary responsibility of the consultant will be to document the name, definition, valid values, quality, security, and appropriate use for data. This position offers an excellent opportunity to learn the Personal Lines business while creating comprehensive knowledge repository for Personal Lines data assets that is shared across the enterprise.

The data stewardship team works closely with the data, delivery, and analytics groups within the larger team to drive governance and consistency in the data, tools, reporting, and analysis published for broader use. Customers include all areas of Personal Lines such as actuarial, data science, operations, billing, marketing, financial, product management as well as external areas such as small commercial, AIS (Actuarial Information Services) and the Enterprise Data Organization.

  • Process efficiencies / improvement - Accountable to drive for improvement of all data quality core processes to execute with simplicity, speed, quality and efficiency.

  • Acts as the master owner and authority for all information for assigned application / database and strategic projects.

  • Takes accountability and responsibility for maintaining business dictionary and data quality at the application / database level.

  • Certifies information at the Line of Business (LOB) level to be accurate and consumable

  • Establish and build effective relationships with business customers and external contacts to deliver on accountabilities.

  • Develop an understanding and knowledge of key business functions.

  • Responsible for building, maintaining and managing business dictionary along with appropriate valid values within the Enterprise Metadata Repository (Datawiki).

  • Integrate all application / database technical metadata into the EMR for available capabilities.

  • Assure all Datawiki technical metadata is connected to the business context along with Data lineage.

  • Partner with business and the enterprise data standards organization to ensure that data and metadata captured meets the organization’s standards and requirements.

  • Provide training or education to Personal Lines employees on governed data sources and metadata.

  • Implement roles, responsibilities, procedures, processes and guidelines for respective application / databases in compliance with enterprise business data standards.

  • Ensure business information is properly utilized in the operational environment.

  • Proactively suggest improvements to operational process or Enterprise Data Governance & Stewardship program

  • Actively participates in the Enterprise Data Office’s activities to improve the program, achieve enterprise certification for critical data elements and resolve duplicate terms and definitions in EMR.

  • Proactively enhances business semantics, maintaining metadata and ensuring data quality.

  • Test/profile of data to ensure proper operation and accuracy.


Experience & Skills


  • Understanding of Personal Lines business is a plus.

  • Knowledge of and access to front end data collection, including Café`, QTI, 1View, etc is a plus

  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and independently.

  • Excellent communication skills to interact effectively with both technical and non-technical users at all levels of the organization.

  • Excellent analytical, interpersonal, and organization skills.

  • Self-motivated, strong sense of ownership/accountability, and results oriented with the ability to manage time and schedules effectively.
