The Hartford currently has an in-house opportunity for a Senior Trial Counsel – Tort and General Liability in Austin, TX.

This is a remote position. The position will cover Central TX area (Primarily Austin and San Antonio) with the potential to handle some cases in Dallas and Houston on an as

needed basis.

Depending on level of experience can hire as Senior Staff Attorney or Senior Trial Counsel.

This position partners with our customers and claim centers to deliver the best possible result in pending litigation against

our insureds.

Reporting in to the Staff Legal Managing Attorney the Senior Trial Counsel position is for

very experienced attorneys with significant, relevant automobile and general liability trial experience, who demonstrate an ability to handle cases of high

complexity and high exposure in a variety of subject areas, and able to handle cases independently with an ability to demonstrate and mentor and coach others.

The Senior Trial Counsel is charged with the following responsibilities:

· Responsible for handling complex and high exposure litigation.

· Analyze complex legal and factual issues, conduct extensive, well-reasoned legal research, independently develop

and present defense strategies on behalf of clients.

· Prepare complex pleadings, written discovery, depositions, motions and briefs in support of defense strategies

without supervision because of level of experience and expertise.

· Provide effective and timely communications, information, legal advice and other services to clients and claims on

legal and factual issues.

· Communicate with the court, witnesses, opposing counsel and co-counsel in a manner consistent with established

office procedures.

· Responsible for the prompt, efficient and effective disposition of assigned cases.

· Independently prepare and present witnesses and evidence at trials, judicial and administrative hearings,

arbitrations and alternative dispute resolutions.

· Research, draft, file and argue appellate briefs in reviewing courts on behalf of clients.

· Demonstrated expertise in respective practice area.

· Demonstrated trial/appellate expertise.

· Adviser to Managing Attorney, staff, clients and claims.

· Mentor staff

· Attend CLE seminars

· Interacts with internal clients and Major Case Unit regularly

· Level of work is highly complex, with high exposure


- Bachelor’s Degree required

- Law Degree required

- JD from accredited law school and license to practice in the state of Texas.

- Member in good standing of applicable Bar Association

- Strong communication and computer skills

- Significant, demonstrated understanding of claims and litigation

- 15 years legal experience preferably within the insurance defense industry dealing with tort and general liability matters.

- Experienced litigation attorney handling high exposure and complex matters.

- First chair jury trial experience required.
