Reporting in to the Chief Product Officer of Middle Market, the Head of Middle Market Umbrella will be accountable for evaluating and expanding The Hartford’s capabilities as a provider of specialized commercial umbrella liability coverage, including leadership of the refinement and enhancement of umbrella underwriting risk appetite, multi-year product strategic agenda, guidelines, policies and processes needed to further growth objectives. This is a critical leadership role within The Hartford’s Commercial Markets, Middle Market business as we look to further our investment in specialized expertise through the growth of umbrella capabilities and product breadth and depth. The Head of Middle Market Umbrella will be accountable for the strategy development and overall financial results of the umbrella business, and will be tasked with building a team of specialized, dedicated umbrella technical and production underwriters.

 

Specific Responsibilities:

 

Financial, Strategy Development & Execution• Drives expertise and value-added differentiation through the expansion of Middle Market’s umbrella offering and capabilities• Develops and executes the overall Middle Market umbrella strategy; communicates the strategic agenda and roadmap to stakeholders and drives/monitors successful execution of initiatives• Accountable for the financial results of the countrywide Middle Market umbrella book of business

Product & Underwriting Leadership• Operates as an umbrella subject matter expert within the Middle Market business and broader organization; provides thought leadership and support to product initiatives• Designs and implements product strategy and roadmap, appetite expansion, pricing and service capabilities• Establish and communicates underwriting guidance: researches underwriting issues, establishes and/or modifies underwriting policy, guidelines, and appetite as well as leads communications to home office and field audiences for implementation• Manages overall underwriting appetite as it relates to umbrella capabilities, guiding risk selection and pricing decisions; collaborates with Middle Market actuarial resources to ensure the successful implementation of pricing strategies • Maintains joint accountability with Middle Market CUO for umbrella referral processes; distributes and cascades authority in accordance with MM CUO framework

Distribution Management• Develops and nurtures countrywide strategic alliances with distribution partners and clients to profitably grow the umbrella book of business• Supports and provides leadership to umbrella specific sales and marketing initiatives; provides subject matter expertise and direction in the development of specialized umbrella external and internal marketing collateral • Partners with other senior Middle Market business leaders to define countrywide distribution strategies for umbrella, including performance expectations and sales plans; partners with Sales & Distribution and field resources to execute on relationship management as it relates to top partners engagement and execution

Leadership & Talent Management• Directly manages umbrella specialist underwriting leaders and provides broader leadership, directly or indirectly, to a team of production resources; works closely with partner organizations to ensure clear alignment• Informs broader organizational talent needs to further umbrella specialization and differentiated capabilities, including claims, risk engineering, product, operations and underwriting talent• Informs overall Middle Market underwriting and product training agendas to further the team’s knowledge base, and acts as a subject matter expert in recommending umbrella specific training content and resources • Fosters a high performance, top quartile employee engagement and performance enablement culture; establishes and monitors operating routines to maximize collaboration and team connectivity• Accountable for talent pipelining and acquisition efforts, performance management, talent development, succession planning and compensation decisions  Qualifications: Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree required; MBA or other related graduate level degree preferred• CPCU or other relevant industry designation preferred• 15 years Commercial P&C insurance industry experience required, with background and expertise in umbrella underwriting and product development• Strong industry reputation as both a technical and externally facing market leader• Underwriting acumen and discipline, technical knowledge and a depth of specialized experience in umbrella coverage is essential• Sound financial acumen, understanding of P&L, knowledge and experience with setting and driving an operating plan; track record of setting goals and delivering results• Superior analytical & problem-solving skills, including the ability to encourage new ways of looking at problems, processes and solutions, develop sound recommendations for capitalizing on opportunities and improving results, and generate new ideas for profitable growth, including new product ideas, markets, and target customers• Leadership/management experience, strong mentoring and coaching discipline and prior experience building a team of underwriting specialists  • Superior communication skills, both oral & written; ability to deal confidently with all levels of the organization, including senior executives in Home Office, field leadership, underwriters and business partners
