Director, Product Management, Western Region Personal Lines

Overview of the Position

Reporting to the AVP, Region Lead Product Management, the Director, Product Management, Western Region, will have full profit & loss responsibilities for standard auto and homeowners lines of business in a multi-channel environment. This territory includes Arizona and Colorado, two of our larger states. The Director, Product Management will be accountable for developing and executing a strategic vision that enables long-term, market-beating profitable growth for his/her market. This leader will also play a primary role in developing and executing countrywide channel strategy supporting our AARP Direct, and Agency distribution channels. Note: this role is based in Hartford CT, however remote candidates will be considered.

Responsibilities:

• Accountable for delivering top line growth and bottom line profitability across all distribution channels in assigned states.

• Identify new business opportunities, strategic options for growth such as product positioning and distribution alternatives in their state markets.

• In partnership with Direct Channel Marketing, works to drive demand for our direct programs.

• In partnership with Agency Sales and Distribution, leads market demand: potential markets, available markets, underserved and penetrated markets.

• Work in partnership with resources to support the actuarial function necessary to drive business results and comply with state specific standards.

• Manage resources necessary to maintain state compliance and competiveness regarding policy forms and coverage.

• Effectively utilize a network of reliable, efficient working relationships with other departments including countrywide product, research, underwriting, claims, service, marketing communications and other areas that support the business to monitor market dynamics, understand our customers better, and lead efforts to make changes to business offerings and processes.

• Manage staff of Product Managers and Assistant Product Managers and will assist the Region Product Lead with overall talent management, development and growth for the region.

• Travel commitment of up to 20% of time for market-related travel.

• Demonstrated knowledge of state laws in order to make decisions regarding key issues & to identify opportunities to affect legislative change. • Develop & sustain productive relationships with state regulators.

Technical/Functional Skills

• Able to effectively and independently conduct competitor analysis & gain an in depth understanding of market dynamics including competitor UW initiatives, rate level analysis, forms analysis as well as economic trends & emerging issues in the market.

• Demonstrated knowledge of state laws in order to make decisions regarding key issues & to identify opportunities to affect legislative change.

Qualifications:

Candidate Profile

• A bachelor’s degree preferably in a discipline requiring critical thinking and analytical skills; a MBA is desirable but not necessary.

• Ideal candidate will possess a minimum of eight years of experience in Personal Lines product, pricing and/or underwriting. New York experience strongly preferred.

• Demonstrated leadership experience managing a comparably sized P&L responsibility in personal or commercial lines insurance.

• Ideal candidate will possess a minimum of three years of experience leading and developing a team.

• A team player with experience building strong relationships both internally and externally, and with a strong sense of self-initiative and desire to succeed.

• Ability to develop immediate credibility in unfamiliar environments; including agency partners, affinity prospects, regulators, senior leaders, and cross functional project teams.
