Overview of the Position

At The Hartford, the Middle Market Business Segment has a strong desire to expand the breadth and depth of its Commercial Property capabilities becoming a stronger risk player in the marketplace. This line of business, at approximately $320m, has support and visibility at the highest management levels, including our Enterprise Underwriting Office, making this a high-profile opportunity.

We are looking for a strong individual contributor with a robust background in the property line of business. This individual, reporting directly to the AVP, Property Actuarial, will serve as a thought partner in identifying and executing on enhanced capabilities in the areas in catastrophe modeling, budgeting and portfolio management.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as direct liaison between our Enterprise Risk Management and key MM Business Unit teams (Product and Underwriting).

  • Provide ongoing feedback in support of annual CAT budgeting process.

  • Build a robust, repeatable process (Actual vs Expected) for monitoring CAT charges and adjusting our financials throughout the year to reflect the actual in-force book.

  • Partnering across the organization, deliver an effective CAT portfolio management system with controls and a clear operating routine.

  • Partner with Enterprise Risk Management in providing feedback to refine reports in order to drive more insight and business action across the portfolio.

  • Leveraging preliminary work, enhance design and implementation of front-line Underwriting location visualization to inform real-time CAT aggregation management.

  • Identify innovative opportunities for enhanced modeling capability for CAT perils (e.g. Wind/Hail).

  • Foster a strong connection (feedback loops) between business partners (UW, Product, ERM, Claims, Risk Engineering).

  • In partnership with other members of Property Actuarial team, assess the rate adequacy of CAT perils. Establish a mechanism for achieved price measurement between non-CAT and CAT.

  • Provide an independent assessment of the efficiency of our reinsurance purchases (facultative and treaty).

Qualifications:

Experience & Skills:

  • Degree in math, actuarial science, economics, or other quantitative analytic field. FCAS/ACAS preferred. Prior property pricing/ratemaking experience a plus.

  • 5 years of insurance experience

  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with thorough attention to detail. Ability to own projects and anticipate obstacles and customer needs.

  • Thought leader, who challenges existing processes, can influence others and can drive a process to a conclusion while meeting critical deadlines.

  • Self-motivated with the ability to manage time effectively in an environment with multiple priorities and stakeholders.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to foster strong customer relationships by conveying technical concepts to audiences of various levels and diverse technical backgrounds.

  • Moderate-to-advanced programming skills in SQL and SAS.

  • Predictive Modeling experience in SAS, EMB, R, Python or other modeling software strongly preferred.
