Title: AVP & Actuary - Workers’ Comp and National Accounts ReservingLocation: United States-Connecticut-HartfordJob Number: 1701985Overview of the PositionThis leadership role leads the Workers’ Compensation and National Accounts Reserving team which manages over $9B of reserves across Small, Middle, and Specialty Commercial.  We’re using continuous innovation and a deep understanding of the business to monitor trends and measure profitability to inform business strategy.  Our reserves for these lines have visibility at the highest management levels, making it a high-profile leadership opportunity. 


The AVP will lead the Workers’ Compensation and National Accounts Reserving team of 8 actuaries, actuarial students, and analysts.  This leadership role requires the AVP to establish relationships with claim, business segment, underwriting, actuarial, and senior management stakeholders.  The AVP will interact both within and outside of the actuarial discipline to broaden sphere of influence in addition to prioritizing work for maximum impact while keeping the team motivated.  The workers’ compensation environment changes quickly and the AVP will need to understand and communicate the impact of those changes to inform reserve levels and business strategy. Responsibilities:

Specifically, the individual in this role will:

Lead the team in completion of reserve indications on a regular basis:

Workers’ Compensation for all segments

Auto and General Liability for National Accounts (Specialty Commercial)

Loss Sensitive and Wrap-Up Construction

Workers’ Compensation Discount for all segments

Audit Premium, Retrospective Premium, and Dividend for all commercial lines

Present technical reserve and claim trend analysis in a summarized but transparent format to business partner and senior leader (President, CFO, Chief Underwriting Officer, Chief Claims Officer, business segment EVPs) stakeholders to ensure reserving risks and opportunities are considered in setting company direction.

Reach across the organization to work with Claims, Pricing, Segment Actuarial, Product, Underwriting, and other matrixed partners to drive insights and initiatives. Understand the impact of reserving actions on business operations and proactively communicate such actions.

Understand the details and nuances of our Workers’ Comp and National books, which span 3 commercial business segments, and claim practices.  Create and monitor leading indicators to drive reserving actions that proactively account for trends in the books or claim practices to get in front of loss development changes. 

Help set the agenda and the multi-year roadmap for the Reserving team.

Drive efficiencies on the team.  Ensure that we reduce complexity to produce high-quality work with an eye towards accuracy.  Execute on deadlines.

Represent the Workers’ Comp line in semi-monthly cross-functional leadership huddles, as well as Health of the Line meetings, State of the Line meetings, and Monthly Business Reviews as needed to various executives.

Build an understanding of the Workers’ Comp system and competitor reserving actions.  Look inside as well as outside to arrive at the most informed answers and decisions regarding reserving actions.

Partner with Actuarial Pricing team in creating trends, loss ratio forecasts, and rate indications on a regular basis to ensure all risks and opportunities are transparent and considered. 

Manage, coach, and develop three direct reports, including accountability for their performance and professional development.Qualifications: Experience & Skills

8-10 years of P&C insurance experience.

FCAS, career ACAS or leadership experience in a core actuarial function.

Experience leading technical personnel and driving high performance teams working on a variety of projects.

Ability to prioritize work efforts and operating plans to achieve business goals and objectives.

Proven track record of challenging existing processes, influencing others and driving processes to a conclusion while meeting critical deadlines.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills to convey technical results to our business partners and influence decisions.

Team player with strong collaboration skills and ability to build trusting, effective matrixed partnerships.

Demonstrated track record of executing change to core business processes through the use of innovative techniques.
