We are looking for a strong Middle Market Underwriting Director who will drive Sales, Marketing, Profit, Growth, and Quality of Middle Market business. The Middle Market Director leads the execution of the Middle Market Strategic and Operating plans within local market territories through strong agency/territorial management and leading a high performance team focused on achievement, commitment and innovation, requiring a deep understanding of local market and competitors.

Middle Market Underwriting Operations, which includes-

• Ensures that underwriting policies, practices and guidelines are understood and adhered to by the MM underwriting staff.

• Inspires team to achieve profit and growth objectives through risk selection, individual account pricing, mix of business, flow of business and management of quality analysis for the team

• Is the local office expert in technical underwriting knowledge guiding the actions of underwriters in writing and retaining quality business

• Provides ongoing technical development through coaching and QA results analysis

• Driving consistency in underwriting routines and accountabilities that deliver proven results. These include pipeline & agency management, underwriting practices, client facing meetings, renewal retention strategies, service delivery and enterprise representation

Agency Sales/Territory Management, including

• Building strong, distinctive strategic partnerships with key agents and brokers

• Developing and implement segment sales plans. Keen insight into competitors' strengths, weaknesses and strategies to leverage for profitable business and increased agency penetration

• Driving team accountabilities with local agents

People Leadership and Development including

• Attraction, selection and development of high caliber talent from within or outside of the organization

• Ensures staff continuity for key positions by anticipating and planning for future staffing needs

• Effectively manages staff through active performance management, implementation of a meaningful development process; builds a strong team which fosters collaboration, open dialogue and involves them in critical decision making and planning activities

• Facilitates the cross-training of Underwriting staff

Planning and Monitoring Results

• Closely manages plan results on an office wide and individual basis and directs implementation of specific actions to address business shortfalls in both profit and growth


Qualifications include:

Highly regarded for leadership capabilities; previous management experience, including leading a team of underwriters (either directly or through project work), is strongly preferred as well as the following:

•8 years multi-line carrier underwriting experience in P&C Middle Market required

•Strong sales and negotiation skills; agency territorial management experience required

•Solid financial / business acumen skills

•Bachelor's degree preferred

•CPCU or CIC coursework preferred

•Proven track record of setting goals and delivering results.

•Drive and commitment to do what is necessary to get the job done efficiently, thoroughly and professionally.

•Demonstrated ability to drive business plans and achieve results

•Position level and title commensurate with experience and determined after careful review and validation of candidate qualifications
