This position will join a growing team of Construction underwriters responsible for handling a new segment focused on new business account sizes ranging from 50K – 150K in premium, and renewal accounts <150K in premium. The Construction Connect team will work to increase Construction’s market share using a targeted broker/agent distribution and focused strategy for growth. Working in a team environment, this position will collaborate to service accounts, identify key construction agents/brokers and construction opportunities, implement sales and marketing activities, maintain a strong customer focus and demonstrate an understanding of Construction’s appetite and strategy.

Key Accountabilities will include:

  • Underwrite new and renewal book of business, totaling approximately $5-7M in total written premium; evaluate specialized construction risks
  • Develop and maintain industry expertise within highly specialized coverage areas; capable of underwriting complex business, requiring limited support and infrequent referral activity to complete quotes
  • Accountable for pricing and program development to reflect identified exposures, financial condition, insured’s safety program and claim legal environment
  • Consistently applies all applicable line of business underwriting guidelines when making decisions
  • Quote renewals and new business opportunities with underwriting authority approval through analyzing renewal applications and re-rating accounts
  • Execution of marketing, sales, service and relationship management functions relative to a targeted producer group and related book of business
  • Creates, drives and executes on strategies for new and/or renewal accounts in partnership with Director, Construction UW & Sales (prospective book management, executes on the mix strategy, territorial and agency sales plans, etc.)
  • Consults and provides solutions
  • Responsible for and influences retention
  • Manages the sales process including planning, operating routines, and monitoring
  • Establishes and maintains pipeline; manages cross-sell and up-sell opportunities across team; generates cross-sell opportunities
  • Is well versed about every aspect of The Hartford's value proposition to best position us for success. Is professionally demanding and holds internal and external customers accountable.
  • Provide exceptional customer service and focus, including expedient responses to inquiries and submissions
  • Consults with agents/brokers to answer questions regarding coverage, process and appropriate resources within The Hartford based on their unique needs
  • Effectively manages and develops relationships, internally and externally
  • Knowledgeable about risk engineering and claim service available to insureds
  • Maintains thorough knowledge of applicable laws, regulations and governance
  • Other responsibilities as warranted


Minimum experience, education and skills required:

  • 2-5 years professional work experience; prior experience and proficiency in commercial underwriting with experience specific to the construction industry preferred
  • 4 year undergraduate degree and/or insurance designations preferred
  • Previous experience working with agencies/brokers in construction underwriting, sales/marketing or service capacity is preferred
  • Strong technical knowledge, decision making and analytical skills
  • Strong marketing and relationship management capabilities
  • Ability to function successfully in a fast-paced, team environment requiring a high level of customer service and responsiveness
